Updating from the Ha Ha Times portion of my last post - the geniuses on the Superhero Hype Boards have figured out “the clue”!

enaxor in IRC ran the grid of letters through a simple substitution cipher…

“color me impressed just use the second letter of the fourth word to the right of each circled five letter word to find out where to go from here”

look for the red circled words… on the hahahatimes… then follow the instructions…

Clicking on the clowns’ noses will inflate the balloons. Inflating the nose changes the color of the eyes. Getting all the clowns’ noses blue at the same time gets you a ticket to a new site,

Looks like Mr. J has decided to flex some muscle.

The Dark Knight NewsaPalooza!

Posted by: Dustin Christian  //  Category: The Dark Knight, movies
The Gotham skyline with the Bat signal. From Batman: City of Crime. Art by Ramon Bachs and Nathan Massengill.

Image via Wikipedia

I’ve been hardcore slacking on the blog front lately. I’m sorry about that. I’d like to give you a great excuse about how life has just been insane and busy and all that, and it is, but I also hit a slump that I couldn’t get out of and the longer I’ve slacked, the harder it’s become to stop slacking and get back to some serious posting. I’ll try to do better in the future.

Luckily, I’ve come across alot of news on my favorite subject - The Dark Knight - including a review, a new poster, and a viral update!

In the first bit of news, some lucky sumbitch has already seen the movie and submitted a review to Ain’t It Cool News! Tim Bisley, the author of the review, gives us a loose breakdown of the plot, thus there are obviously some spoilers, reaffirms that the movie is - at heart - the story of Harvey Dent, makes comparisons to films like Heat and Greek tragedies, and calls for a posthumous Oscar nod for Ledger.

You can, of course, head over to AICN to read the review, but I’ll quote it here for my fellow lazy bums:

Hi Harry and the rest of the crew,

Just after watching The Dark Knight. I see no reviews are online so I
thought Id send you my review.

Ive kept this review as spoiler free as possible as I dont want to
ruin anything like someone did recently with another Christian Bale
movie!!!

Ill start by saying that I was a fan of Batman Begins and am a huge
admirer of Christopher Nolan’s body of work. I had my faults with BB
mainly to do with how they shot and edited the fight sequences but
felt it was a great start to a much larger story and I jumped with joy
when Gordan pulled out the Joker card at the end.

The Dark Knight opens with a bank heist sequence that highlights how
the joker is always one step ahead of the criminals he is working with
and the police who are after him. Numerous men break into a bank
controlled by the mob wearing clown masks and comment on how The Joker
has put the whole thing together. This is the catalyst for which the
rest of the events in this movie takes place.

The heist does not go to plan well at least not for all the gang. Its
a great set up and payoff and a unique way of introducing the ace in
TDK’S whole or in this case its Joker.

Heath Ledgers performance of the joker is truly one for the books. A
man of no remorse or morals who simply wants to see things burn. There
is no back story or establishing the character. He is fully formed. He
does have some dialogue scenes that reveal a bit of his background.
Lets just say he has some issues with his father and that smile of his
is rooted in a gesture of love. He is far from a caricature and has
depth . He realises that without Batman he would not be. The Joker is
almost more of a terrorist than criminal. He is not motivated by
money. He wants to see people suffer. Its a damn shame that this was
Heath Ledger’s final major performance as it shows a whole different
side to him as a performer and I now know that he was endlessly
talented. To watch him walk away from an exploding hospital dressed as
a nurse is probably my favourite moment Ive seen on film so far this
year. Also look out for when he makes a pencil disappear such a cool
moment! Best supporting Oscar anyone?

Gotham is still engulfed by crime. Falcone’s reign as the head of the
mob is over and that seat has been filled by Salvatore Maroni played
by Eric Roberts. What becomes clear is that there are also numerous
other gangs within Gotham. Its no longer just one syndicate. They are
all in some way in cohoots but the arrival of Batman has made it
harder for them to operate.

Batman has inspired the city officials particularly Harvey Dent. The
DA for Gotham city. This is really his story. The rise and fall of the
white knight. He is Bruce Wayne’s hope for Gotham City. A hero who
doesn’t have to wear a mask. A man who can inspire hope in the masses.
If BB was about fear then TDK is about hope and is relevant in today’s
times. Harvey Dent is a good honest man who is willing to bear the
weight of bringing down all the criminals on his shoulders and what
that means for his own life and those he loves. In terms of his
transition to Two Face all I will say is that everything online that
Ive seen is fake. The moment we first see him in hospital when Harvey
Dent
asks Gordan what his nickname used to be in Internal Affairs and
Gordan says Harvey Two Face and Harvey turns to him . Such a clever
way of establishing the character. Even down to his double sided coin.
Lets just say Aaron Eckhart puts Tommy Lee Jones to friggin shame!

The film feels more like a crime drama in a grand city scape than a
typical comic book movie. It feels like Heat except Batman is Al
Pacino
and The Joker is Robert De Niro and just like in that film we
have a great scene between Heath Ledger and Christian Bale across a
table. There is also an element of a Greek Tragedy.. There is a vast
sense of morality at play within the film.

Dent is trying to bring down the criminals and wants to bring them in
under a RICO charge. To do this he needs Batman’s help as he has to
bring in the man who takes care of all their money. A glorified
accountant as Rachel Dawes puts it.Think Al Capones accountant in the
Untouchables. So Batman ventures to Hong Kong. It adds to the idea
that this is very much set in the real world and its not just Gotham
that Batman can access.

This all happens within the first third of the film. The run time is
two and a half hours. It doesn’t feel that long as there is so much
going on within the film. Ive always felt Christopher Nolan was able
to handle pacing unlike many movies that are over two hours these
days. This is also his first entirely linear film and he proves
himself to be a gifted storyteller and a master of utilising film as a
visual medium. He fills each frame with so much scope and detail. You
can tell he is enjoying himself with the amount of money he is being
allowed to play with and wants to better himself and the franchise.
Although this movie doesn’t feel like an instalment in a franchise.
The best thing I can think of for comparison is The Godfather Part 2.

There is no sign of the Batcave in this film. Although Alfred does
make mention of it saying how he looks forward to it being finished.
Bruce now lives in a pretty sweet penthouse apartment and his new
batcave is in an underground layer in the docks. Bruce and Lucious Fox
have been working on the suit and toys although to my surprise the
Batpod was in BB and nobody spotted it. It’ll put a smile on your face
when it makes its introduction.

Christian Bale owns this role. He is Bruce Wayne and he is Batman. He
is also a third character in some regards as there are almost two
sides to Bruce Wayne. The public figure, a playboy billionaire who
knows how to spend his money and the Bruce Wayne behind closed doors
who only Alfred and Rachel get to see. A man covered in bruises and
wounds who desperately wants be free of Batman but is compelled to
make a difference as no one else can. He can play the villain to be
the hero as he does.

The second third focuses on the capturing of The Joker. The city is
living in fear as he makes threats on national television that he
always follows through with. You simple have no idea what he will do
next. There appears to be no reason to his madness although that
proves to not be the case.

I don’t really want to give away anymore. I will say there is death
but not in the way some of the fan boys who have watched the trailer
are thinking. There is a prestige moment within the film that is a
true Chris Nolan moment. The scarecrow is in the film but has a very
minor role.

Just go see it on opening day in a room full of fans. Ill be doing the
same and have no doubt Ill enjoy it even more the second time round.

Enjoy.

Tim Bisley

Damn, this sounds like an awesome movie! I wish I had more geek friends around Orlando so that we could buy out a showing for this thing.

In our next bit of Dark Knight news, Comic Book Movie has released a new poster! Click the image below for a larger copy.

Some men just want to watch the world burn...

Finally, there’s a new edition of The HaHa Times!

To my knowledge, “the clue” has yet to be found.

Dark Knight Viral Campaign Updates - Gordon Activation and Dent Survey

Posted by: Dustin Christian  //  Category: The Dark Knight
Cover art for the second printing of Detective Comics #818, by Simone BianchiImage via Wikipedia

Emails went out from Jim Gordon today letting us know that we’ll have to step up in order to stay out of jail next week.

My friend,

Indictments are about to be handed down. If you don’t want your name on one, we’ll need your full cooperation in an upcoming operation.

In case you haven’t heard, we are struggling with a bit of corruption in the department. I’m not about to let the Gotham PD collapse in on itself, so we’re taking action. We’ve identified a group of offenders that need to be apprehended. Problem is, most of these cops are hightailing it out of the city. But a C.I. just like you just gave us some information on their last known whereabouts. Now all we need is to catch them. This is where you come in.

Consider yourself on deck. I’ll contact you next week, and let’s just say it’s in your best interest to play along. County’s not a place you want to spend the rest of your life.

Lt. Jim Gordon, MCU

People also received calls on the numbers they submitted to Acme Security Systems asking them to participate in a survey and received a phone number to give out to others who would like to participate. The number, by the way, is 877-777-6197. On the surface, the survey seems like a fairly straightforward opinion survey.

But, if you check out the latest update on the Concerned Citizens for a Better Gotham website, you see this note:

Message from the Webmaster:

You may be wondering why I haven’t updated this site recently. Well, you wouldn’t either, if you were facing legal actions like slander charges and defamation of character accusations.

I can’t afford to get sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars, especially now that everyone who supported this site is “unavailable” or “can’t remember” they had anything to do with the site.

If I weren’t waiting for my last paycheck, I’d go on a little “vacation” myself. In fact, if you don’t get any more updates from me in the next few days, it means I did just that.

This whole smear campaign has been a real SOURCE of consternation for me. I’ll be glad when it’s all in the past. And you know what? I just might vote for Harvey Dent.

William Bucksworth-Haven, Webmaster Extraordinaire

Taking note of the stresss on “SOURCE”, view the source code for the page. You’ll find this bit in the code -

Enter those numbers for the survey answers and you’ll hear a message that I’ll let you listen to for yourself, mostly because I’m too damn lazy to transcribe it at the moment.

Since it’s the number that we submitted to ACME, I assume the message is for Joker’s clowns, but it could just as easily apply to the people involved in trying to bring down Harvey Dent.

Of course, they could be the same people, couldn’t they?

What do all of you think? Let me know!

New Harvey Dent Phone Message and Website Updates in Dark Knight Viral Campaign

Posted by: Dustin Christian  //  Category: The Dark Knight
Harvey Dent's district attorney campaign poster from The Dark Knight.Image from Wikipedia

There has been so much Dark Knight stuff going on lately that I’ve barely had time to even think about researching anything else!

I, and just about everyone else who has submitted their phone numbers to the I Believe In Harvey Dent site, got the following message today:
.

For those not up to listening to the message, it basically consists of Dent talking about a group spreading “slanderous allegations” in an effort to derail his campaign and asking us to visit the “I Believe In Harvey Dent” site to learn how we can help.

The site has been updated with the following information:

3/30 Urgent Announcement

Harvey Dent rejects the slanderous charges made by a shadowy group of unknowns calling themselves “Concerned Citizens for a Better Gotham.”

Harvey Dent has always been truthful and upright in his prosecution of corrupt cops.

There is no truth to any of the charges put forth by the operatives behind this shameless group.

Don’t listen to the lies and innuendos of the people who want to keep Gotham the way it is!

If you want real change in Gotham, join our movement to take Gotham back!

News:

• Meet Harvey Dent! Harvey Dent will be at a Townhall Meeting to answer all
your questions about how to take Gotham back! 3pm, April 1, Gotham
Community Center #12, Gainley

A site for this Concerned Citizens For A Better Gotham has also popped up, with a video, petition, news section, biography section, and form to sign up for updates. Of course, I signed up.

The video, featuring several cops voicing their opposition to Dent, follows this script:

I know Harvey Dent.

I worked with Harvey Dent.

I did case after case with Harvey Dent.

Harvey Dent is no hero.

Harvey Dent has not been honest

about the Gotham Police Department

Harvey Dent lied to the court.

I know, I was there, I saw the whole thing.

Harvey Dent is lynching good cops

For headlines and poll numbers

He’s using money, threats, and blackmail

To get good men locked up.

Harvey Dent is framing good cops

for his own political purposes.

Harvey Dent betrayed those cops.

He betrayed his office.

He dishonored this city, he most certainly did.

Harvey Dent cannot be trusted.

Paid for by Concerned Citizens for a Better Gotham

Here’s the latest news, which I assume will be the main focus on Dent’s April 1st Town Hall Meeting

Eight Cops Unmask Harvey Dent As Corrupt, Out of Control Prosecutor

Eight Gotham police officers stood up for the truth today at a morning press conference at Gotham’s Hotel Internationale. One by one, the police officers took the podium and told their story. Their devastating testimony showed that Dent is a dishonest, corrupt, out-of-control prosecutor who threatened police officers in order to get them to testify against innocent cops who Dent wanted in jail. Francis Notaro, Sergeant, told the press corps that Dent had offered him money to testify against an innocent cop, Jimmy Scaliano.

And just who are these Concerned Citizens For A Better Gotham?

We are a group of over 100 concerned businessmen, police officers, and residents who work tirelessly for a better Gotham city. We believe in strong values, strong families, and clean government. We believe that to fight crime, we must support our brave police department, which is under attack in the streets by thugs and in the courts by corrupt prosecutors. We contribute our time and money to fight to improve our city for all of its citizens.

So it looks like April Fool’s Day will kick off the next phase of this viral campaign.

I’m also working on an update for the Joker’s side of this little dance, that will - hopefully - be coming soon.

New Ha Ha Times Dark Knight Viral Site

Posted by: Dustin Christian  //  Category: The Dark Knight

202px-Manwholaughs New Ha Ha Times Dark Knight Viral SiteSource: WikipediaIn response to the latest edition of The Gotham Times, Joker has released a new edition of The Ha Ha Times and I’m here to walk you through the discovery so far.

On The Gotham Times, point your cursor over the “ha” in the “Gotham” of the paper’s title. You’ll notice that there is a flash animation of the words “ha ha ha” and it is now clickable. Follow that urge to click that link and you’re taken to the latest edition of The Ha Ha Times. This edition is titled The Gotham Lies and has doctored articles like “Harvey Dent Joins Hair Club For Men” and an ad for the Iceberg Lounge’s Titanic Night.

Soon after the new edition’s discovery, the geniuses on The Superheroy Hype! Forums noticed that certain words were circled. User Sam_Cooksey discovered that, by using this formula:

For each paragraph that has a circled word in it, start at the beginning of the paragraph and count how many words until you get to the circled word. That number corresponds with the alphabet A=1 B=2 etc. For example, if the circled word is the fifth word in that paragraph, the letter for it is “E”

We would discover the following messages:

Page 1:
Made you look again. Nothing Here

Page 2:

Red Herring

Page 3 and 4:

Seriously, how many times are you gonna fall for this

As of these writings, that’s all that has been found. Theories are being thrown all over the place, including the theory that this is just a big April Fool’s prank by “Joker”.

Head over to the Hype to follow their progression yourself, or I’ll update this post if and when I come across anything else that’s worth knowing

Gotham City as shown in Batman Begins.

Image from Wikipedia

As pointed out on my last post about the Dark Knight viral campaign by strings, whom I assume to be stringsbatman from the Superherohype boards, there are a lot of updates that I didn’t know about.

So here’s my attempt to catch up.

First of all, those who participated in the movement to drum up support for Harvey Dent’s run for Gotham City District Attorney, like those who responded to the Joker’s demand for fans to take pictures of themselves in Joker makeup, received a print copy of The Gotham Times in the mail. Shortly thereafter, the website for The Gotham Times was updated, seemingly with the same articles.

The new Gotham Times leads to many new sites, including a site for Dent’s rival Dana Worthington, the Drudge-esque Maiden Avenue Report, Dana Worthington’s Gotham Victims Advocate Foundation, a site for St. Swithuns Catholic Church, Batman Supporters Citizens for Batman, meeting place for several groups Rossi’s Delicatessen, and Gotham’s local news network Gotham Cable News.

So far, I’ve found updates on the aforementioned Gotham Times, I Believe In Harvey Dent, Remembering Gina, Gotham Cab, and The Internal Affairs Division of the Gotham City Police Department.

One cool little easter egg I’ve found so far is an ad for the Iceberg Lounge in The Gotham Times. Those who are currently reading the Bat-titles will remember that the Penguin is currently claiming to be going straight as the owner of the Iceberg Lounge.

I’m still sifting through all these pages, so I’m sure that there will be more updates as I find more stuff.

Two New Dark Knight Viral Sites Launched

Posted by: Dustin Christian  //  Category: The Dark Knight

Two new viral sites for The Dark Knight popped up this week, both seemingly related to Harvey Dent’s impending run for D.A. and both apparently under construction.

First is the website for the Gotham City Clerk:

Notices:

• Please excuse the inconvenience, as we are currently rebuilding our website and file system after server damage due to the recent Orange Line destruction. We hope to be back online serving Gotham City very soon.

• Forms and applications for the following services are still available at our N. 6th St. offices: Parking permits, business licenses, dog licenses, festival/block party/raffle/bazaar permits, nightclub licenses, oath of office forms, operator licenses, retail licenses, liquor licenses, street vendor licenses, medical registration forms, notice of claim forms, and garage sale permits.

• The Gotham City Clerk announces approval for extensive absentee voter support in the upcoming municipal election. Once the system is in place, we will post details and procedures for both online and mail-in absentee balloting.

The second site is for the Gotham City Election Board:

COMING SOON!

The Gotham Election Board will be implementing online voter
registration later this year. Watch this site for details.

I’d expect to see updates to both around the March 26th deadline for submissions to the I Believe In Harvey Dent site.
