Captain America Recruits Chronicles of Narnia Writers

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting and don't forget to tip your waitress!!

It’s a big day for Marvel comic movie adaptations and writers!

While I was on hiatus, Joe Johnston was announced as the director of First Avenger: Captain America. Johnson directed another WWII-era superhero movie, The Rocketeer, and worked on art direction and character design on the Star Wars movies, so I’m optimimistic that he’ll be able to bring a little something extra to Cap.

Things are moving forward at a swift pace now - Variety reported last night that Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the writing team for Chronicles of Narnia, will be writing the script for First Avenger.

Now I’ve never seen Chronicles, so I’m counting on you to tell me what you think - was Chronicles of Narnia any good? Do you think these guys can handle Cap?

Sound off, people!

Matt Fraction Has Been Brainwashed

Posted by: Dustin Christian  //  Category: Marvel

Apparently, writing Invincible Iron Man has been too much for Matt Fraction’s brain. First, he was seen at Comiccon wearing a blasphemous “Tony Was Right” t-shirt and now he’s made the artwork available for download. Just print it out onto an iron-on label, iron it onto a t-shirt, and VOILA!

tony-was-right-250x300 Matt Fraction Has Been Brainwashed

…iron-on blasphemy.

Superman Awesome Arena Tournament of Champions Week Twelve ResultsFirst of all, in the interest of speeding this thing up and moving on to his next tournament, Mike is hosting the polls for both semifinal battles this week so that the final can occur next week. Make sure to get over there and vote, because both of this week’s battles are worth eight points!

Last week, Superman overpowered Hulk, but there were no breakdowns submitted, so there are no bonus points for that.

Here are the current standings:

AJ holds steady at first place with six first round points for correctly predicting victories for Martian Manhunter, Thor, Red Tornado, Captain America, Green Lantern, and Hulk; six second-round points for predicting Batman’s victory over Martian Manhunter, Thor’s victory over Red Tornado, and Green Lantern’s victory over Captain America; twenty-two bonus points for posts on his myspace blog and view askew; three more bonus points for signing up for an account on The Forums of Awesome; and the ten bonus points for breakdowns this week and last for a total of FORTY-SEVEN POINTS!

Midknight has gained some ground this week with seven first round points for knowing that Batman, Thor, Red Tornado, Captain America, Green Lantern, Hulk, and Superman ain’t nothing to mess with, six second-round points for knowing that Batman and Thor REALLY ain’t nothin’ to mess with, ten bonus points for posts on ComicVine, two bonus points for pimping us on his blog, one bonus point for helping Mike search for Batboat pictures, three more bonus points for signing up with Forums of Awesome, and the ten bonus points awarded for his breakdowns the last two weeks to give him a total of THIRTY-NINE POINTS!

Midknight could easily overtake AJ this week

RJP is also still in the race in third with two first round points for supporting Batman and Red Tornado, four second round points for backing Batman and Superman, 18 bonus points for posts on Between The Staples and his Facebook account, and three bonus points for signing up for the Forums of Awesome for a total of TWENTY-SEVEN POINTS!

In fourth, Xers has four first round points with victories for Martian Manhunter, Thor, Red Tornado, and Captain America, two bonus points for posts on Cre8Buzz and BlackPlanet, and three more bonus points for signing up with Forums of Awesome for a total of NINE POINTS!

Patrick D. is in fifth place with two points for backing Batman and Martian Manhunter (I wonder who he’ll pick when they fight eachother?”), two bonus points for posts on Patrick Says and his Twitter, and three more bonus points for signing up at Forums of Awesome for a total of SEVEN POINTS!

In sixth place, DougFungus has three first round points for supporting Batman, Red Tornado, and Captain America and three bonus points for signing up at Forums of Awesome for a total of SIX POINTS!

In seventh, Weston backed Martian Manhunter, Thor, Red Tornado, and Captain America for a total of FOUR POINTS!

Finally, in eighth place, Naimad89 backed Batman to give him ONE POINT!

Once again, the standings are:

1st: AJ - 47 points

2nd place: Midknight- 39 points

3rd place: RJP - 25 points

4th place: Xers- 9 points

5th place: Patrick D. - 7 points

6th place: Dougfungus - 6 points

7th place Weston - 4 points

8th place: Naimad69 - 1 point

This week, Superman is throwing down with Green Lantern and Batman is taking on Thor to see who will meet in the final round of the Awesome Arena Tournament of Champions!

I’ll elaborate in the comments on Mike’s poll, but I’ll tell you my predictions now - Thor and Green Lantern in the final round.

Protest all you like, but remember this - I have yet to be wrong on an Awesome Arena pick.

Once again, don’t forget to vote in both of Mike’s polls and tell us who you think will win and why in the comments either there or here for a shot at a total of sixteen points! And don’t forget to tell me how your pick will win for a chance at five bonus points!

Also, Mike has asked me to let everyone know that the polls close this Friday instead of Sunday.

This game is still not over, folks.

Let’s get it on!

I\'m getting hitched!First of all, my apologies for running so late with this post. I was busy out of town all weekend getting engaged to the lovely Rhonda Gail of Life. Love. Lipstick. It won’t happen again, I promise - last time I get engaged.

Apparently, nobody could be bothered to do a write-up this week and I don’t want to make y’all wait any longer, so no write-up this time. Sorry, kids.

But I do think it’s essential to let you all know that Green Lantern won and my streak has continued. Take that, evil-doers!

To the points…

AJ holds onto first place with six first round points for correctly predicting victories for Martian Manhunter, Thor, Red Tornado, Captain America, Green Lantern, and Hulk; six second-round points for predicting Batman’s victory over Martian Manhunter, Thor’s victory over Red Tornado, and Green Lantern’s victory over Captain America; twenty-two bonus points for posts on his myspace blog and view askew; three more bonus points for signing up for an account on The Forums of Awesome; and the ten bonus points for breakdowns this week and last for a total of FORTY-SEVEN POINTS!

RJP stays in third with two first round points for supporting Batman and Red Tornado, two second round points for backing Batman, 18 bonus points for posts on Between The Staples and his Facebook account, and three bonus points for signing up for the Forums of Awesome for a total of TWENTY-FIVE POINTS!

3rd place: RJP - 25 points

4th place: Xers- 9 points

5th place: Patrick D. - 7 points

6th place: Dougfungus - 6 points

7th place Weston - 4 points

8th place: Naimad69 - 1 point

This week, Superman and the big bad Hulk are throwing down to see who is the strongest there is. And don’t forget to tell me how your pick will win for a chance at five bonus points!

Finally, remember that since this is the second round, correct predictions are now worth TWO points. The game remains far from over, folks.

IESB and Kevin Feige Talk Captain America

Captain America

Image via Wikipedia

IESB got to ask Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige some questions about the upcoming (in 2011!) Captain America movie.

The biggest news is probably that the film will take place during WWII, possibly ending with Cap getting frozen, allowing on of the early scenes in the Avengers movie featuring Cap’s rediscovery?

Here, I’ll let them tell it:

IESB asked Feige if the Captain America film would be a period piece. He confirmed yes, the story will take place during World War II, just like the comic book origin story. He says they plan to remain very faithful to the source material and completely traditional.Feige also confirmed that it was definitely the Captain America shield that was seen in IRON MAN on Tony Stark’s work-station as he’s removing his suit for the first time. It’s just an Easter Egg and probably won’t have anything to do with the Capt. America story.

What about that casting rumor making its way around the web that Matthew McConaughey would be taking on the role? Nope, Feige says that’s absolutely false.

Nothing against Matthew McConaughey, but I’m very glad he won’t be playing Steve Rogers.

Mjolnir held aloft on the cover of Thor vol. 1, #494. Art by Mike Deodato Jr.Image via Wikipedia

Mike decided to kill the Awesome Arena site, so there will be no “repost”. To make things as easy as possible, though, I’ll check both his post with the poll or my post here to award points. As always, I hope you continue to visit me no matter where you try to claim points.

Right then, on with the show.

Since AJ was the only one to turn in a fight breakdown, he gets the five bonus points for default. You’re slacking, Midknight!!

The two combatants appear in the ring, and without exchanging a single word, they fly at one another. Thor swings high Mighty Hammer, but only meets with an intense Tornado that his android opponent has kicked up. Thor stands his ground, and when the dust settles, he hasn’t budged. He smiles, and raises Mjolnir above his head. He calls down the wrath of the Gods on Red, in the form of a massive bolt of lightning. The lightning fries Red Tornado. When he tries to move, he begins convulsing uncontrollably, and falls to pieces.

And my prediction streak continues!

To the points…

AJ holds onto first place with six first round points for correctly predicting victories for Martian Manhunter, Thor, Red Tornado, Captain America, Green Lantern, and Hulk, four second-round points for predicting Batman’s victory over Martian Manhunter and Thor’s victory over Red Tornado, twenty-two bonus points for posts on his myspace blog and view askew, three more bonus points for signing up for an account on The Forums of Awesome, and the ten bonus points for breakdowns this week and last for a total of FORTY-FIVE POINTS!

Midknight has droppeda little further behind in second with seven first round points for knowing that Batman, Thor, Red Tornado, Captain America, Green Lantern, Hulk, and Superman ain’t nothing to mess with, four second-round points for knowing that Batman and Thor REALLY ain’t nothin’ to mess with, ten bonus points for posts on ComicVine, two bonus points for pimping us on his blog, one bonus point for helping Mike search for Batboat pictures, three more bonus points for signing up with Forums of Awesome, and the ten bonus points awarded for his breakdowns the last two weeks to give him a total of THIRTY-SEVEN POINTS!

5th place: Patrick D. - 7 points

6th place: Dougfungus - 6 points

7th place Weston - 4 points

8th place: Naimad69 - 1 point

Awesome Arena Tournament of Champions Week Five Results, Week Six Discussion

Captain AmericaImage via Wikipedia

Ok folks, I’m typing this out with one eye, so this post will definitely be short and possibly contain typographical errors. You have my apologies and I’ll correct any typos ASAP.

With that out of the way, here we go.

Captain America and Booster Gold both step into the arena. Gold, unable to resist bragging, starts listing all of his powers. Flight, enhanced strength, force fields, matter absorption, yadda yadda yadda. Unimpressed, Cap punches Booster in the jaw and knocks him out.

Cap wins, mofo’s.

On to the standings.

AJ (still from the vicious, vicious Civil Blitzkrieg) maintains his lead with four points for picking Martian Manhunter, Thor, Red Tornado, and Captain America as winners and ten bonus points for posts on the ViewAskew boards and his Myspace page, for a total of fourteen points!

RJP of Between The Staples is hanging strong for someone so frequently wrong with 2 points for his faith in Batman and Red Tornado and ten bonus points for posts on Between the Staples and his facebook account, for a total of twelve points.

Midknight is right on their tails with four points for supporting Batman, Thor, Red Tornado, and Captain America five bonus points for posts on his ComicVine blog and one more bonus point for helping Mike with his search for a batboat for a total of ten points.

Xers is holding strong in fourth place with four points for picking Martian Manhunter, Thor, and Red Tornado and two bonus points for posts on Black Planet and Cre8Buzz, for a total of six points

Patrick D. and Weston are now tied for fifth with four points each. Patrick has two points for his faith in Batman and Martian Manhunter and two bonus points for posts on his blog and twitter and Weston has four points for picking Martian Manhunter, Thor, Red Tornado, and Captain America.

DougFungus is standing in sixth with three points for backing Batman, The Red Tornado, and Captain America

Finally, in seventh place, Naimad89 has one point for supporting Batman in his week one victory.

As in every previous week, bonus points are making a difference - make sure you pick up an advantage by telling all your friends about this contest and letting me know about the pimpage!

Also, Mike is giving away three bonus points to anyone signing up for the Forums of Awesome! Y’all should take advantage of that one.

Once again, here are the current standings:

1st place: AJ - 14 points

2nd place: RJP - 12 points

3rd place: MidKnight - 10 points

4th place: Xers- 6 points

5th place: tie Patrick D. and Weston - 4 points

6th placeDougfungus - 3 points

7th place: Naimad69 - 1 point

This week, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) will be taking on his longtime friend and occasional partner, Green Arrow (Ollie Queen) in a battle of Galactic-level versus street-level battling.

Can Ollie find a way to overcome the overwhelming power of Hal’s ring? Let us know by voting in Mike’s poll at Panels of Awesome and then coming back over here to make yourself heard and collect your potential point.

Also, don’t forget to pick up three bonus points by signing up for a Forums of Awesome account!

As for me, I’m going to go rest this eye and see if I can become a functioning member of society once again.

Awesome Arena Tournament of Champions Week Four Results, Week Five Discussion

Posted by: Dustin Christian  //  Category: Tournament of Champions

Sorry for being late, folks - we had some network problems for most of the day and just now got everyone back online.

red-tornado Awesome Arena Tournament of Champions Week Four Results, Week Five DiscussionTo make up for it, and because this one is fairly simple, you get a breakdown with this post.

Iron Fist opens up with some crazy-ass kung-fu combos, hitting Red Tornado faster than the eye can see. The man’s like a whirlwind! Rand charges up his Iron Fist chi shit and punches Reddy in the chest so hard that the Tornado is actually dented.

Tornado looks at Danny and Danny knows he done fucked up. Red Tornado knocks Rand across the arena with one punch and then shows Iron Fist what a real whirlwind is all about. He creates a wind funnel around Iron Fist and sucks all the air out of Danny’s lungs, making him pass out. The fight is pretty much over at this point, but Red Tornado knows it’s going to cost a fortune for the body shop to get this dent out of his chest and he’s taking that money out of Iron Fist’s ass. The funnel spins faster and faster until it creates a vacuum, making the external pressure on Rand’s body much lower than the internal pressure.

Iron Fist explodes and it takes the cleaning crew all week to clean up the Iron Guts.

As you may have guessed, Red Tornado won last week with authority.

Here are our standings.

AJ (still from the vicious, vicious Civil Blitzkrieg) maintains his lead with three points for picking Martian Manhunter, Thor, and Red Tornado as winners and eight bonus points for posts on the ViewAskew boards and his Myspace page, for a total of eleven points!

RJP of Between The Staples is hanging strong for someone so frequently wrong with 2 points for his faith in Batman and Red Tornado and eight bonus points for four posts each on Between the Staples and his facebook account, for a total of ten points.

Midknight is right on their tails with three points for supporting Batman, Thor, and Red Tornado and four bonus points for posts on his ComicVine blog and one more bonus point for helping Mike with his search for a batboat for a total of eight points.

Xers has moved up to fourth place with three points for picking Martian Manhunter, Thor, and Red Tornado and two bonus points for posts on Black Planet and Cre8Buzz, for a total of five points

Patrick D. has dropped to fifth place with two points for his faith in Batman and Martian Manhunter and two bonus points for posts on his blog and twitter for a total of four points!

Weston is in sixth place with three points for believing in Martian Manhunter, Thor, and Red Tornado

DougFungus is standing in seventh with two points for backing Batman and The Red Tornado

Finally, in eighth place, Naimad89 has one point for supporting Batman in his week one victory.

As in every previous week, bonus points are making a difference - make sure you pick up an advantage by telling all your friends about this contest and letting me know about the pimpage!

Once again, here are the current standings:
captain-america-200x300 Awesome Arena Tournament of Champions Week Four Results, Week Five Discussion
1st place: AJ - 11 points

2nd place: RJP - 10 points

3rd place: MidKnight - 8 points

4th place: Xers- 5 points

5th place: Patrick D. - 4 points

6th place: Weston - 3 points

7th placeDougfungus - 2 points

8th place: Naimad69 - 1 point

This week, we have Booster Gold’s technology vs Captain America’s awesome levels of bad-assery! For clarification’s sake, Skeet has been barred from the arena and we’ve resurrected Steve Rogers for one last whoop-ass session.

I have my favorite, but who’s yours? Head over to Panels of Awesome to vote in the poll (and drop Mike a comment or two, he likes those) and then head back over here to tell me who you voted for and why. As in all first round battles, correct predictions get a point and confirmed incidents of spreading the word about our little tournament get bonus points.

Let’s get this party started.

For the Love of Guest Posts - AJ Knows Why Batman is Superior to Iron Man

Posted by: Dustin Christian  //  Category: Miscellany, Tournament of Champions

202px-Batmananimated32 For the Love of Guest Posts - AJ Knows Why Batman is Superior to Iron ManSource: WikipediaCracka’s Note: During the craziness of the first week of the Awesome Arena Tournament of Champions battle between Batman and Iron Man, MidKnight and AJ placed a bet on who would win. MidKnight supported - of course - The Dark Knight. AJ supported Iron Man. The loser would have to write an essay on why their choice was inferior to the other combatant. As we all now know, MidKnight won.

This is AJ’s essay.

Batman. He’s a man, not a bat, but that doesn’t make him any less awesome, does it? You bet your “Holy Moodiness!” it doesn’t. No, Batman truly is the peek physical specimen that any hero should aspire to be, and marvel at when he or she is not. Meanwhile, his opponent in this battle, Iron Man (Super alias of Anthony Stark), is what? A sniveling drunk, that’s what! Some gullible naves (myself not among them of course, I obviously know Batman could and did kick Iron Girl’s ass) actually believed that Stark had the one-up on Bats because of his armor. Bah! Anybody who’s read a comic besides Archie knows that Batman has countless weapons at his disposal, such as EMPs and grappling guns to dispatch the Iron Whimp. Batman is also an expert in many, many hand-to-hand forms of combat, something Tony can’t claim. Sure, Tony may have sparred with Captain America or Hawkeye a few times, but you know who he sparred with a lot more? Jack Daniels, thats who!
Another point in Bruce’s favor is his wealth. According to the Forbes List at http://www.forbes.com/2007/12/11/richest-fictional-characters-oped-books-fict1507-cx_mn_de_1211fictional15_land.html , Bruce Wayne is ranked Number Eight in the Top Fifteen Wealthy Fictional people, while Tony Stark is stuck in double digits at Number Ten. And, on top of that, Bruce spends his money on crime fighting and charity. You know what Stark spends it on? The Avengers, booze, and whores.
And that’s not all. According to BusinessWeek, at http://images.businessweek.com/ss/06/05/smart_heroes/index_01.htm, Batman comes in at Number Two on the Top Ten Smartest Superheroes, while Tony Stark is close behind at Number Three, with the key word being, behind. As in “Tony Stark may get more behind, but Bruce Wayne is no slouch either, and he doesn’t need a parade of bimbos to make him feel better about not being Batman…because he is Batman.” Put that in your Stark Enterprises brand pipe and smoke it!
Lets take a second to examine the cast of characters that these two surround themselves with. Batman has the the Robins - Dick Grayson (who became bad ass Nightwing), Jason Todd (who became a bad ass corpse, and later bad ass resurrected and pissed off dude), and Tim Drake (who is still a whiny pansy and occasionally cool), and that chick one who died but no one seems to remember or really give a damn about. There’s also Commissioner Gordon, who’s played by Gary Oldman, ’nuff said. Then theres Barbara Gordon, Catwoman, and all his various allies and their baddassery. On the flip side, who does Iron Man have? Jim Rhodes, who is actually a cooler version of Iron Man than fucking Iron Man! Happy Hogan, God rest his soul, who isn’t around anymore. Pepper Potts, who Tony spent all his time trying to get with, despite the fact that she was married to his buddy Hogan. Gee Tony, you sure do know how to pick a bunch of winners. And then theres Jarvis. I have to give it to Jarvis. I couldn’t even lie and say Alfred Pennyworth is cooler than Jarvis, because Jarvis is fuckin’ harsh. Keep it real EJ, keep it real.
Okay, so lets move on to the rogues galleries of the two combatants. Clayface, Scarecrow, Penguin, The Riddler, Killer Croc, Ra’s al Ghul, Two-Face, and of course the mothafuckin’ Joker! Not to mention hundreds more, all of whom Batman has opened a can of whoop-ass upon. My God, what a group of amazing villians. I may make mine Marvel (Alliteration Ahoy!), but the Joker and Two-Face are by far two of my favorite comic villians (which is why I’m psyched for the the upcoming Dark Knight). So complex and layered, and fucked up…gah, I could do a thousand words alone on why those dudes are awesome, but I won’t. Conversely, who does Iron Man get? And, for the record, I’m not talking Avengers villians here, I’m going with original Iron Man villians. Fing Fang Foom, M.O.D.O.K, The Mandarin, Titanium Man…eh. I mean, sure, they’re aight, but they’re no Harvey Dent or Joe Kerr. Plus, Iron Man actually has a villain called “The Unicorn.” A Soviet super soldier called “The Unicorn.” If I was a Soviet, and somebody told me I could be a super villain, but I had to be “The Unicorn.” I would go “For the Motherland!” and shoot myself in the face.
So, anyway, what else is there to say? Iron Man is currently starring in Mighty Avengers, in which he seemingly dies in almost every god damned issue, only to miraculously and unfortunately not be dead in the next issue. He’s also got his own series chugging along “Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D”…whoopee. He got Captain America killed because of his stupid Civil War…asshole. He’s probably going to be revealed as a Skrull, absolving him of every wrong-doing he’s committed recently, while causing a massive continuity train wreck, which Joe Q will just shrug off and give a passive aggressive insult to the heart of the fan base. Iron Man will come out of some kind of prison, give up running S.H.I.E.L.D, which will of course return to the infinitely more capable hands of Nick Fury, and tell everybody that everything that happened he would’ve done the opposite of. He will miraculously clone Captain America, marry him, and reunite the Avengers while causing Maria Hill’s head to explode….okay, the Maria Hill head explosion thing is just wishful thinking, but you all know you were thinking it too.
And what will Batman do? Batman will continue being awesome, fighting the Joker, Tim Drake will die or disown him sooner or later to drive him even further into his cause, The Dark Knight will do better at the box office than Iron Man, the Iron Man game will be “aight” but overall disappointing, and Batman will forever reign supreme.
Thee End

Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb on Captain America: White

Posted by: Dustin Christian  //  Category: Marvel
Captain America

Image from Wikipedia

According to Comic Book Resources, Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale will be reuniting on another “color” book for Marvel, this time focusing on Captain America:

During World War II, one of the Marvel Universe’s greatest hero partnerships was that of Captain America and his teenage sidekick Bucky Barnes. The team met its end in the closing days of the war when a plane exploded, dumping Cap into the waters of the North Atlantic and sending him into suspended animation. When he was revived years later, the Sentinel of Liberty was told his young sidekick had died in the explosion.

What did Bucky mean to Cap? What defined their partnership? How did their relationship evolve? These questions and more will be answered in the upcoming six-issue miniseries “Captain America: White,” which reunites the fan-favorite creative team of writer Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale. CBR News spoke with the pair about their highly anticipated project, and why it’s one of their most ambitious yet.

From there, it goes on to a discussion with Loeb and Sale about the book and their future plans for more “color” books with Marvel. It’s worth checking out.

I’m not sure how I feel about this one. There is a lot of quality in most of their other collaborations, both on the colors and on things like Long Halloween, which makes me hopeful. But then Loeb has seemed incredibly off his game lately, which makes me very skeptical, but I’m sure that I’ll at least check it out.

As far as I can tell, there’s no date for the release yet.
