Scott McCloud Comic Announces Google’s New Browser

Google apparently hired Scott McCloud to write a comic to explain their long-rumored browser, now called Chrome, and put a happy face on their impending integration with SkyNet and eventual world domination. Incidentally, what color are the Terminators underneath all that fake flesh? That’s right, chrome! But that’s not the point today.

The comic currently directs you to a download page that doesn’t seem to exist, but it appears that this is because the comic wasn’t supposed to be leaked quite yet. According to blogoscoped, who has a breakdown of features for those who don’t feel like reading the comic (to whom I ask “What the hell are you doing reading a comic blog?) and some interesting commentary on what this could mean for the browser market and internet as a whole, Google has announced that Chrome will be released tomorrow, September 3rd. Yes, it’s true: I drew a comic for Google explaining the inner workings of their new open source browser Google Chrome.
Details have been leaking all over the Web since a few copies apparently went out pre-launch by mistake, so here’s the skinny on my small part of this very cool software project.
Is this a webcomic?
No. It was designed as a printed comic for journalists and bloggers. Lots of people have had fun scanning those advance printed copies and posting them however, which is fine with Google (and me) since it’s published under the creative commons license.
The scanned-in versions are clunky, Mr. Webcomics Guy! Will there be a more readable web version?
Sure. We’ll whip something together soon.
Who wrote the script?
The engineers, for the most part! I helped conduct interviews with about 20 engineers who worked on the project, then adapted what they said into comics form. Some paraphrasing, lots of condensation, and one or two late drop ins, but basically it was a very organic adaptation and I had a lot of latitude.
Is the food at Google as good as they say?
Better.

Update! It appears that the Chrome Beta is now available for Windows. Those of us on Mac will have to wait a bit longer.
