Born Laughing, A Dark Knight Fan Film

In keeping with the running Dark Knight theme that I seem to have going lately, I found this fan film via TomzToy’s Bat Blog.

“Born Laughing” seems to be an imagining of an early (and possible first) murder by Heath Ledger/Christopher Nolan’s interpretation of the Joker.

The writing is decent, the makeup is pretty close to Ledger’s, and the acting is pretty good for a fan film. The performance seems like an amalgam between Jack Nicholson’s performance as the Joker and what I imagine - based on the trailer, prologue, and promotional material released - Ledger’s performance to be like. Of course, we’ve yet to really see Ledger’s performance in detail, so this fan could be dead-on.

Am I alone in getting the impression that this is the Joker basically wiping out any trace of his past life?

this is pretty good for a fan film. i like your interpretation. i just like to think that this is what the joker does it has no real significance which makes it all the more ironic.

I totally agree - there’s no real need to find its place in continuity in order to enjoy it.

There were just a few lines that made me think that he and the girl knew eachother before he was “The Joker”, but it in no way needs to be true.

Someone sent me the link to this page, it’s pretty cool to see it here. As the guy that wrote it, I thank you for posting it here. The premise of the film is that this is the first day of the Joker. I didn’t presume any type of origin story, because first of all that is not my place, and second, he it is so much cooler to not know where he came from/what made him that way. So, this is the first day (after the “smile scars” healed) that he put on the purple suit and clown make-up and set out to make his twisted mark on the world.

The script was intentionally written so that the relationship between Joker and his victims is totally ambiguous. He could be wiping out his past (which is alluded to in the line about making himself a blank slate), but it could just as easily be completely random people that this psycho has just fixated on and decided to play games with. In the original script it wasn’t a girl hostage, but a lonely old man, whose wife Joker killed. We couldn’t get an old man in time, so some changes had to be made. I like to let the audience use their imaginations and fill in the blanks.

Also, this was just the last few pages of the script. The beginning shows where the male victim (me) came from, and I can tell you this, I was not his first murder victim.

Again, thanks for posting and for the comments. We never expected to see this popping up places. Since, we’re still not sure what is going to happen with the first parts of the script, if anyone would like to read it let me know. I’m hapy to share.

Thanks for coming by! I definitely like the way you left the relationships ambiguous. The Joker sometimes has a purpose, and sometimes he’s just feeling a little wacky; I love that.

I’m also one of those people who doesn’t want to know where the Joker came from - I like that angle that he could be anyone. Like he says in The Killing Joke - All it takes is one bad day.

Also, I would love to read the first part of the script, if you don’t mind sharing it. I obviously don’t know how long it is, so it’s up to you if you’d like to post it here in comments or email it to me at crackerbob@fortheloveofcomics or… whatever you like.

Again, thank you for stopping by - I really enjoyed your film.

It’s about 12 pages, I am happy to email it to you. Please feel free to comment on here if you like. And thank you very much for the positive words.

I can definitely do that. And I messed up above.. the email address should be crackerbob@fortheloveofcomics.com
