Megacon 2008 - Day 2!

So far, I’ve learned three essential con-going lessons.

First, it’s better to bring a con buddy. It’s possible that flying solo is benefiting me in the sense that I’m getting to go to the panels that I want to go to and the only compromises I have to make are because of time, but I’ve also gotten alot of enjoyment from striking up conversations with fellow geeks and I think I’d be getting even more enjoyment from having a group of people to wander around with. Next year, I’m going to try to make arrangements to meet up with people, and not at the last minute like I did this year.

Second, I need to get a recording device of some kind to take with me to panels. I simply can’t write fast enough to take notes on everything and I know I’ve missed alot of statements this year, possibly important ones.

Third, and possibly most importantly, leave SEVERAL hours early for the con on a Saturday. I spent literally two hours in traffic for the last half-mile to the con this morning and missed the first panel. AJ, if you’re reading this, it was the independent film maker panel where I planned on getting more information on those short films. Sorry, man, I’ll try to get more information from some other sources.

Anyway, lessons learned that will hopefully make a very fun experience even more enjoyable next year.

The first panel that I actually made it to today was “DCU Countdown to Crisis” with Mike Marts and Ian Sattler. Considering their answers to most questions were to make sure to read Batman RIP and Final Crisis, both events sound like they’ll be very exciting. This was the panel where I really learned the second lesson up there, because I know I missed some very good stuff while I was taking notes. Most of what I missed was Final Crisis related and most of what I got was Batman RIP related. You gotta pick your battles and I’m a Batman fan, sorry.

Anyway, here’s what I caught:

The only other panel of note I caught was Joe Quesada’s “Cup of Joe” panel, where…

I skipped today’s “Marvelous Men” Panel with Daniel Way, Mark Texeira, and David Finch (a tactical error on my part) in favor of Mark Waid’s panel on Boom! studios, which was cancelled. Somehow I felt awkward sneaking back into the Marvelous Men panel, but I should have done it anyway. I imagine that was a very good panel and I’ll try to find someone else’s recap for y’all.

I also didn’t really feel like sitting through the webcomics awards, costume contest, or rave, so all I have left for you are a few crappy pictures. Tomorrow is the last day and I plan to get there early for some more interesting panels.

First I have Peter Rios from Comic Geek Speak and those very kawaii cat ears I told you about yesterday

Peter Rios is so Kawaii

Next are two Quesada pics, one of Joe beginning the panel and the second of the presentation of Joe Quesada day.

The rest of these are of various costumes and I think they’re all self-explanatory. Also, I’m sorry that my photography skills suck.

Another awesome Con write-up! No worries about the missed panel sir. It’s one of many things I’ve learned about attending Conventions, you ALWAYS, for some reason or another, miss one panel you intended to go to.

Either way though, the info you did catch sounds sweet. I’m really pumped for all the Blackest Night lead-up in the DCU…just wish I didn’t have to wait a year and a half for all the payoff. *grumbles*

And finally, gnarly pics.

I’m way jealous, I’ve been looking at pictures, that thing is HUGE! They’re doing tattoos there even! I’m completely blown away, and wish I was there.

Thanks, AJ!

This article seems to have a pretty accurate list of what was shown at the film fest, though World’s Finest wasn’t shown…

Tim, I know! This is my first con and I think I’ve been kinda spoiled now - smaller cons just won’t do!

I was seriously considering having a tattoo done at the con, but I decided to wait and have an artist I really trust do it.

If you decide to go next year, definitely let me know - I’m going to try to meet up with a bunch of people so that I have people to hang out with.

Thanks for the link man!

So Bob, do you have any plans to make the pilgrimage to San Diego this year?

I would love to do ComicCon, but I don’t have the funds for plane, hotel, and admission this year - maybe next year, if I’m lucky.

Ah. If you can make it next year, I’d highly suggest it. It rightfully blows every other Con out of the water. At least of all the ones I’ve been to.

Oh yeah, San Diego ComicCon is LEGENDARY. I have a year to plan, so I may be able to go to more cons next year.

Wondercon, New York and San Diego ComicCons, DragonCon, Emerald Con, and (of course) Megacon are on my wishlist for next year. Of course, I probably won’t get to all of them, but I’m aiming high!

Archon may also be within reach since it’s in my original hometown of St. Louis, but it doesn’t have alot of focus on comics.

Anyway, we’ll see… like I said, I have a year to plan.

I saw Harlequinn and Ghostbusters a couple times. Not too many costumes were really great this year, though.

I didn’t have any points of comparison, but I thought there were a few cool ones. The cardboard Megatron was impressive, I was sad that I didn’t get his picture. Another set that I was disappointed not to get a picture of was the green and blue Spartan from Halo.

Thanks for visiting and don’t forget to tip your waitress!!So Nightwing 142 at once confirmed my suspicions that the al Ghul’s are behind the whole corpse-snatching thing and made me feel like a fool for thinking I was all insightful for picking up on it during the DC Countdown panel at Megacon.
