Y The Last Man - Keep Your Damn Opinions

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting and don't forget to tip your waitress!!

AJ and The RJP (That’s your new name, man. Learn it, love it, put it on your business cards) were the only ones to answer my plea for opinions. AJ thought that I should devote a post to each issue, with the exception of ones that I have no real reaction to, for your maximum lulz. Robert thought I should do a post per story arc. This requires me to make the decision myself, which I was trying to avoid, but I’m doing it anyway.

AJ’s “maximum lulz” argument, combined with the fact that I can easily do at least one post per day, even over the upcoming Megacon weekend, made me fall in love with his idea and want to close voting early, but Robert’s point about each issue having its own post feeling like just another series of reviews was a good point, too.

So I split the difference and decided to do this somewhere along the lines of my Messiah Complex posts - I’ll try to give a running commentary on each issue, giving my initial impressions as I read, but they’ll all be lumped together into a post per story arc and I’ll also give my overall impressions. This may make for very long posts, but I’ll try to include visual cues so that you can skim past things that you’re not really interested in.

Hopefully this will make a good compromise and work out well, but I appreciate any feedback as to how it’s feeling and may change things up as we go.

Speaking of long posts, I planned on leading into the first issue from here, but it would be an incredibly long post if I lapsed into the entire arc, so I’ll just throw this up for now.

As we speak, I’m halfway through the first issue and I have alot of commentary that will have to be trimmed down now that it won’t be getting its own post. Off the top of my head, I have no idea how many issues this arc is, and probably couldn’t give much of a guess as to how long it’ll take me to get through them and post even if I did know how many issues there were.

How about Monday? I should be able to get through the first arc by then, even with Megacon going on. If I get it up before then, happy surprise! Otherwise, let’s all meet back here on Monday evening.

In the meantime, Friday Night Fights has been delayed until the 14th, so any posts between now and Monday will most likely be Megacon-related, but it’s my first con, so I may be too busy running around being a fanboy to even post about that

Have a nice weekend, folks!

Word. I’ll be looking forward to it.

In the meantime, if you have the spare time to answer good sir, I have two questions.
a) What do you think of the upcoming Avengers/Invaders crossover, and it’s kinda-sorta ressurection of Captain America, bringing a younger version of him from the past with the other Invaders?
b) Did you get Buffy Season 8 Issue #12 yet? If so, what do you think of the big hook up?

Have fun at Megacon. I expect lots of photos and lots of posts about it!

I look forward to your post ’cause I need a reason to read Y the Last Comic Book I would ever buy to shut up some ppl I know. Bullshitting them is getting me in shit and caught that I just don’t read the book. :P

You should try to do live posting from the con!

Hmmm… good questions.

Honestly, I kind of wrote off the whole Avengers/Invaders thing when I heard about it because I was (and kinda still am) a bit burnt out on hype, and Alex Ross is always hyped, so I haven’t really thought much about it. Now that you mention it, though, it could be very very interesting to see everyone’s reactions to seeing Cap again, especially Bucky/New Cap and Tony Stark. It will also be interesting to see Cap’s reaction to finding out his future. It does open up all sorts of time stream conundrums, but I’ll ignore those for the sake of story. I liked the Earth X series, so I think Jim Krueger and Alex Ross deserve a chance on this one.

As for Buffy, I pick up my comics tomorrow and thus haven’t read issue 12, but I know about the hookup. My thoughts? My cynical side feels like it’s total pandering to the slash kids out there, but I could see the hookup coming last issue, so it doesn’t feel completely forced to me. Otherwise, I don’t know - it’s no big deal to me. People experiment all the time, why wouldn’t Buffy, especially when she’s always so isolated? I’m sure it feels very nice to be wanted and/or desired. The fact that what’s her face is basically in love with Buffy (and Buffy likely doesn’t return those feelings) will probably have some interesting repercussions. In short, I’m more interested in where they go from here than the actual sexiness or shock of the hookup.

[...] And here (actually all this comes from CrackerBob wanting to review Y The Last Comic I Am Told To Buy and asking ppl how): http://www.fortheloveofcomics.com/2008/03/05/y-the-last-man-keep-your-damn-opinions/ [...]

Rob, I’m seriously considering it, but it really is quite possible that I’ll just be running around and giggling like a total fanboy.

I’ve never been to a con, so I have no idea what to expect, but I’ll do what I can.

More “people” in the Marvel U need to experiment, likely would have ended Civil Bore pretty quickly, I think.

Are you implying that Tony Stark and Steve Rogers just needed to get it over with and hump?

Yeah, I know what you mean. When I first read about young-Cap showing up, I was like “well, he just died what, three or four issues ago? why bring him back already?” But the more I think about it, bringing him back so soon after his older-self’s demise will have alot more impact than leaving him dead for a year or so and then having him show up in the “zomg! last page reveal!!!11″ capacity.

And as for Buffy, I totally agree with you. I think the lasting repercussions will definitely be an interesting subplot throught the season.

Right, and I think we’ve had enough time to come to understand the Marvel U. without Steve and how it’s affecting everyone, and Tony’s been humanized enough for us to care about him missing Steve, that this could be very effective.

And then the Invaders turn out to be Skrulls!!!!!

dun dun dun

…or not.

You never know.

The only one that I’m certain is NOT a Skrull is Nick Fury. Everyone else is suspect.

I agree about Nick, but a baddass ending to Secret Invasion is, it’s all over, everyone who was a Skrull is revealed, Fury kicks everyone’s ass, and then the final page shows him morphing into a Skrull with the dead Fury laying at his feet, saying “Begin Phase 2″ or something.

The only downside to that is it would mean the whole stupid plot again.

Ooooh, that WOULD be hard core!

I want to see Peter Parker getting some man love on now that he’s not hitched!

Also I think the Nick Fury is a Skrull ending would be neat until you realize that yes, they would then squeeze and ride that gravy train of Skrull crap for many many yrs.

Oh anyone buy the X-Men vs Apocalypse trade that came out this week? Wow. Lots of Skrull/X-Men action with the whole Wolverine was a Skrull bit, Wolvie being death, Skrulls as X-Men through out the book. Good timing on reprinting that one Marvel Marketing Machine!

Very good point on the Nick Fury thing; If that was the ending of Secret Invasion and that was it, I’d like it. If they used it as an excuse to just keep dragging the whole thing out, then it would be lame.

And no, I didn’t pick up that trade - I don’t think I’ll get any of my comics read until next week sometime. I really need to drop some titles, but I can’t decide which ones!
