Aquaman’s or Martian Manhunter’s Days Numbered?

The Omniscient Rich Johnston of Lying In The Gutters has some new rumors of impending doom for some DC “Heavyhitters”:
So. If Warner won’t let DC Comics kill off Batman in “Final Crisis,” who can DC get away with introducing to the Grim Reaper? I mean it has to be decent names, but it also has to be someone that a major franchise license isn’t totally resting on.
From Geoff Johns’ CBR interview: “There are still tons of characters to write. Aquaman is a big one. I have very specific ideas for him. Very specific.”From the letters page of this month’s Johnny DC “Justice League Unlimited,” in response to a young reader who doesn’t like the changes made to Aquaman: “Fans of Aquaman’s original look can look forward to a new comic book later in 2008.”
May be the original look, but will it be the original character?
I only ask, because the two names marked for karking I’ve been given by a DC source are Martian Manhunter and Aquaman.
I can only assume “karking” is similar to “killing”.
He also has rumors of an impending resurrection:
Frenzied old school DC fans may be placated by another series. What I hear is… Geoff Johns, Ethan Van Sciver, “Barry Allen: Rebirth.”
It’s hard for me to get overly excited about any of this news, because I’m not exactly a big fan of any of these three characters, but I’m kind of annoyed on principle. A common theme in my opinions lately is that the publishers really need to quit messing around with the characters. There’s a reboot, death, resurrection, time-wall punching, or unexplained magic every time I turn around lately and it’s getting both boring and highly annoying.
STOP IT!!

Hmmm… I hadn’t really thought about the original JLA angle, but the original Aquaman has already died and I thought Wonder Woman went down at some point, too. If you count her time off as Diana Prince and Batman’s broken back, the original line-up of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter has all gone down at some point except for Martian Manhunter.
Like yourself, I’m fed up with DC constantly killing/revamping/bringing back everything from Grade Z characters like The Crime Syndicate to the whole flaming Multiverse itself. I hope (in my heart of hearts) that Final Crisis WILL be the Final Crisis - and that they let Grant handle it without too much editorial interference.
As far as killing off a minor icon or two… well, if they plan on bringing Barry Allen back, you can probably kiss Wally West goodbye. It’s (a sick) tradition now to off a Flash around a Big Event, and if they are indeed going for an original JLA line-up again, that fits right in with the plan.
I would not be overly upset to see Aquaman or Manhunter go. Aquaman was cool when Peter David was in charge, but he can barely maintain a regular series since then. (But you know - if Geoff Johns wants to stick with a regular Aquaman series, though, that might be a very nice treat). Manhunter has a lot of potential, too - which is sadly wasted & no one really seems to care. And since Manhunter ushered in the modern superhero age at DC, (pre-dating Barry Allen) I guess it’d make some sort of perverted sense to put him to sleep at the end of this current one.
Isn’t Countdown over yet? I’m getting sleepy… ![]()
I don’t think I’ve ever read and enjoyed an Aquaman book, but I also never read Peter David’s take on him.
My bet for the next Flash to die is one or both of Wally’s kids. As I’ve said elsewhere, it’s become obvious that the kids are doomed and they’ve recently found out that their days are numbered. I can totally see one or both going kamikaze in true Flash tradition at some point, especially Final Crisis.
I’d hate to lose Martian Manhunter, one of my favourite characters, but he has barely been used for years, and then not generally very well, so would it really be a loss? His three-year-long series by John Ostrander was stunning, but nobody really seems to have ‘got’ him since then, which is a shame.
Still, I’d rather see him go than the death of one or other of Wally’s kids. Death of kids is just not nice. Remember Osiris in 52? That was amzing, but deeply unpleasant.
Yeah, they’d have to be careful in how they killed the kids.. no chopping them up and leaving them in the refrigerator, for instance.
No room in the refrigerator anyways… It’s already stuffed to overflowing with women, gays and coloured people of all genders.

My money is on both Aquaman & Martin Manhunter since A Green Arrow was taken down. Bart Flash was taken down, Hals died and now they just need to karking Wonder Woman and its the original Justice League. I think…
